Translating the alphabet recovery

WPPs Sir Martin Sorrell has said we will probably miss a double dipper of a recession through what is now being termed a ‘LuVVy’ recovery (sweet isn’t it, ahhhh).

But thats not UK Plc’s very own LuVVy recovery, oh no its the global picture with different areas (of the World that is) not the UK, performing slightly different letter shapes.

The ‘L’ from LuVVy belongs to Europe, which when translated means a sharp contraction followed by us bumping along the ground for a while before we all start getting excited again (hmmm, what about Germany Sir Martin? Well I guess there will be differences e.g. Greece and Spain to act as a counter balance).

The letter ‘U’ belongs to Uncle Sam. Here we see the USA mirroring Europe at entry point but with a much, much shorter time spent on the floor before Tigger comes in and bounces all the way to happier times.

However some are voicing concerns that the USA machine is running out of steam and shares over recent days have had a bit of a hammering.

‘V’ is awarded to the emerging markets (BRICs and the Next 11), where following a relatively short period of contraction, growth just runs away with itself and shoots up at a very, very fast pace.

If the advertising revenues are starting to roll in again and if WPPs results are anything to go by, the spend is more in traditional formats (newspapers, TV, mags etc) then maybe good times aren’t too far away.

The stock market is up about 30% or so from eye watering lows plus the ’12 month’ indicators coming out to play suggest that indeed the future is looking a bit nearer and a bit brighter! Hooray!

So if you are moving into new markets to maximise returns from the recovery through advertising or other marketing forms (both off and on-line), its going to take that little bit extra to engage the customer (remember they have been scared to near death recently possible job loss etc).

Translation, localisation and even readability testing of your product and service are all part of the process.
