Terms explained
Translation services or services provided by a Translation Services Provider (more affectionately known as a TSP) and/or the services by a Language Translation Provider (LTP) or just to confuse you even more a Language Services Provider (LSP), can in all fairness be a bit of a minefield.
Here are a few industry terms explained:
- Value added services: services provided by the TSP in addition to translation services
- Competence: skills and knowledge and the ability to demonstrate
- Document: information and its supporting medium
- Interpreting: rendering of spoken information in the source language into the target language in oral form
- Locale: linguistic, cultural, technical and geographical conventions of a target audience
- Proofreading: checking of proofs before publishing
- Register: set of properties that are a characteristic of a particular type of linguistic text or speech
- Review: examine a target text for its suitability for the agreed purpose and respect for the conventions of the domain to which it belongs and recommend corrective actions
- Reviewer: person who reviews
- Revise: examine a translation for its suitability for the agreed purpose, compare the source and target texts and recommend corrective measures
- Reviser: person who revises
- Source language: language in which the source text is rendered
- Target text: result of the translation process in the target language
- Text type convention: set of rules of grammar or terminology to be observed for the type of text in question
- Translate: render information in the source language into the target language in written form
- Translation service provider (or the variations as described in paragraph one): organisation supplying translation services
- Translator: person who translates
